Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Dakota A65-122, pictured below was used by the PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) as a ground training aid from the 17th of November 1980.
On the 30th of June 1999 the PNGDF decided that the aircraft was no longer required for training purposes and needed considerable maintenance with no funds available, it was donated to the National Botanic Garden Management Committee. Under the direction of the Curator at that time, Mr. Rod Spivey, it was moved to a suitable location at the National Botanical Gardens (in Lae), and funds and manpower were provided by various private sector organisations, to return the aircraft to much of its former splendour.
