- Who was the longest serving politician? (up until 2002)
Sir Pita Lus. Sir Pita served the Maprik electorate since being elected to the House of Assembly in pre-independent PNG in 1964. He was defeated in the 2002 general elections after serving the people of Maprik for almost 4 decades.

Sir Michael Somare, also from the Sepik area, has taken this title from Sir Pita. Sir Michael joined the House of Assembly in 1968 and has servered ever since.

In 1997 the PNG government hired South African mercenary soldiers to fight on Bougainville in order to end the long-running crisis. This action led to massive demonstrations and the mercenary contract was rescinded after a virtual mutinity by the defence force lead by Brigadier General Gerry Singirok. Many hail the decision as "doing the right thing".
