- When did eaglewood / agarwood harvesting start in PNG?
Harvesting began in PNG in 1997. There are three agarwood-producing species known from New Guinea: Aquilaria filaria, Gyrinops versteegii and G. ledermannii. The former two are only recorded from Papua (Irian Jaya), however it is conceivable that these two species also occur in PNG and also that there are more agarwood-producing species than presently known.

- Where can I get eaglewood?
The independent state of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been targeted by agarwood harvesters and traders since around 1997. In 2001, the PNG Forest Authority set up an Inter-Agency Committee (IAC) to specifically discuss the trade in eaglewood (agarwood/gaharu).

- Where can I get agarwood (gaharu)?
The island of New Guinea is split into two political entities. The western half of the island is the Indonesian province of Papua (formerly known as Irian Jaya), and is a known source area for wild species of flora and fauna in trade. At present, Papua is believed to be the single most important source for agarwood (gaharu) harvested in Indonesia.

- When I was in PNG I ate a red, crunchy fruit similar to the malay apple. I can't remember what it was called. Can you help me?
Well I don't think it would be an apple. I will take a guess that it was the Lau Lau (eugenia megacarpa). Native to PNG and some South Pacific islands. It is grown throughout the South Pacific for its fruit.
The giant lau-lau grows well in tropical climates, but seems to have some cold hardiness. A number of seedlings have been grown and survived temperatures to about 40F. Trees grow well in shade or part-shade, and like moderate to heavy water as well as high humidity.

Please remember that this is a FAQ database about Papua New Guinea.
Doing a search for PNG or New Guinea or even P.N.G will probably not return much. Keep the search simple. i.e. if you want to find out the population simply enter "population" without the quotes. There is no need to have PNG / P.N.G or whatever in the search string.
Also - Spelling is important searching for 'inkom' will not return items related to 'income'
