The fifity toea coin is often used to commemorate events in Papua New Guinea.

For example a special 50 toea coin was introduced to celebrate the 1991 South Pacific Games.  Another was issuewd to celebrate the Bank of PNG's silver jubilee in 1998.

In 2015 the Bank of PNG released coloured and standard 50t Coins. These two coins retain the dimensions and most design elements of the existing 50 toea coin except that one bears the Pacific Games colours (yellow, red, green, black and blue) while the other is without colour. The banknotes and new 50 toea coins are legal tender as of 21 May 2015.
