- Have you heard of Toulambi tribe, if so, where they were last seen? I know they are nomads living around the Owen range
I suggest looking at the following web site. It may be able to help you. -- http://www.runningman.tv/about/thefuture.htm
There is another web site but it is by way of paid subscription -- http://taylorandfrancis.metapress.com/index/KFB9QFX6P19N0WDK.pdf -- so unless you pay you will not be able to read about the tribe let alone see if the article suits your requirments.

- do you need a permit to use metal detector in the hunt for gold nuggets if so where do you go and are there any areas open to prospecting?
Are you a citizen of PNG or a foreigner? It would be very difficult for a foreign person to gain access to land legally especially if you were looking for gold.

- What is the yearly rainfall of Papua new Guinea and What are the highest and lowest elevations?
This is a difficult question to answer. The rainfall in PNG varies very widely from mere millimetres to metres of rain depending on whereabouts in the country you are. As far as I know the lowest elevation is sea level and the highest mountain is Mt Wilhelm at 4509 metres (14793 feet)

- What do most people in Papua New Guinea do for entertaiment?
A tricky question. PNG is so diverse that there is not one sterotypical answer to your question. I would say, however, that if they are near a TV set during the Australian Rugby League State of Origin matches then they would be watching TV.
Normally there are dances (disco and traditional) to attend. Church functions, school functions, radio, TV, sports events, reading, playing games. I suppose PNG people are no different to anyone else in the world they will find entertainment if they want to be entertained.

- Hi, I was wondering about the rates of tax, as I may be coming up there to work.
Thanks in advance
Jon
It is usually about 47% for an expatriate worker.
to top
- Can you import domestic animals into PNG?
Yes, it is a lengthy process and any domestic animal usually needs to be placed in quarantine for 3 or more months.
to top
- Would TV's from Australia work in PNG
PNG uses PAL B. Analogue TV's (Not digital) will work 100% okay in PNG. PNG has one television station -- http://www.emtv.com.pg -- serving the major towns but cable TV is usually available. Cable TV offers over 20 channels in some locations. -- http://www.hitron.com.pg -- If you can afford it you can also have satellite TV but due to the fringe area reception you will need a large attenna.
The NBC - plans to introduce TV in 2008

- Are there any position vacants available in Telikom?
You would have to ask Telikom PNG -- http://www.telikompng.com.pg/

- How is sago normally eaten in the Gulf province? How palatable is it really?
I gave this question to a person from Kerema to answer but they have not got back to me. Sorry.

- I smoke. Should one bring cigs into PNG or are they cheaper than say Australis, and readily available there?
Not being a smoker I had to ask around for this answer. It seems that cigarettes will set you back about K7.00 for a pack of 20 if you buy the locally made ones.
to top
- what does PNG have to offer? What are the impacts tourists have on the Kokoda track?
The land of the unexpected. Over 800+ languages makes PNG very unique.
What do you mean by impact? They leave some rubbish behind but help to prop up the village economy. Not all tourists leave rubbish behind. Some just leave footprints and happy memories.

- interested in volunteering program but want to be there for sing-sing. thanks
Sing sings happen throughout the year. Some provinces even hold cultural shows on an annual basis. I am sure you will find a sing sing even if you are only in the country for a short period.

- besides Port Moresby what other city was considered for PNG capital and Parliament House?
I would say that possibly Lae would have been considereed but not sure if it was a city or just a town at that time. I will have to ask the audience on this one. Does any reader have an answer?
I believe a site halfway between Lae and Goroka may have been considered but don't quote me on that.

- I will be taking up a position with an NGO in a few months and will be based in Goroka. Can you tell me about shipping household items into PNG, and about bringing my cat with me? Also any other helpful hints for someone who will be moving to PNG to live and work. Thank you, very useful site!
Goroka is a lovely town and one of the most peaceful Highland towns. It is always reasonablyy cool but that is comparing it to the coastal areas. It is always wet as well.
Not sure if you should bring your cat with you. Most animals will require to be quarantined for at least 6 months and this would probably be in Port Moresby but I am not an expert so don't quote me on that.
Shipping to PNG is done on a regular basis and is no different to most other places in the world. Be warned though that your goods will have to go by road from either Lae or Madang so don't pack anything fragile unless you really pack it well or can do without it but then why would you pack it in the first place?. Some PNG roads are little more than bush tracks even the highland highhway is cut sometimes with land falls / slips.
PNG is a lovely place to live. 99.99% of the people are absolutely fantastic and some of the friendliest people in the world. Be aware of your surroundings and watch out for the other 0.01% -- Some people never find them because they are cautious and follow local advice. Ultimately if you mix in with the local people you will have a great time in any part of PNG that you stay in (No different to any other country really).. Feel free to ask some more questions.

- What is kau kau?
In PNG kau kau refers to sweet potato. (kumara, kaukau)

- I may be visiting Port Moresby on an assignment involving work in government departments. Please advise on the general working conditions. Also, is English commonly spoken by government officials?
English is one of the three official languages of the country and other main towns will be spoken although many would prefer to speak tok pisin.
Many govt depts are run down and have not had any real attention for many years so I can not answer your question regarding general working conditions. You may experience 5 star conditions or you may find a department operating out of a building that has very little electcricity, no air-conditioning, possibly no water and was condemned years ago.

- What is the total population of PNG?
In excess of 5 million at the time of the last census. 5,670,544 (July 2006 estimate). Projected PNG population in 2010 will be 6,450,000
to top
- What is the population of Port Moresby?
Good question - think of an answer and double it. The population is expanding rapidly. For the 2000 Census a figure of about 254,000 was reported. Some experts say that this figure could be almost as high as 400,000 people (2007). It is possible to buy results from the National Statistcs office but I assume that these would only be for the 2000 census.

- Do I have to worry about crime while I am in PNG?
Please advise me in which country I do not have to worry about crime and I will move there.
As with any country you must be aware that crime exists. There may be someone trying to pick your pocket or someone trying to sell you a "cheap" watch on the street. From personal experience crime in Port Moresby is not as bad as say Rome, Paris or Los Angeles but could be considered worse than Singapore but then again a crime in Singapore is not necessarily a crime in any other part of the world.
My suggestion is be aware of your surroundings and have a good time. If you leave Port Moresby then you will have an even better time as Port Moresby suffers from the "big city" syndrome.

- Where is popondeta?
Popondeta is the capital of Oro Province (Northern Province) Oro is between Morobe and Milne Bay Provinces.
to top
- how does the average family live in png?
A good question, but a very difficult one to answer. With over 800 languages in PNG there is really no such thing as an avergae family although the majority of the population would be considered subsistance farmers so they live by farming the land and eating what they produce and / or swap / sell to others.

- How many Public research institutions are there in PNG? and list their names with locations?
Good question, everybody does research of one sort or another it is just a question of what is done as public research.
I would say the main research institutes are:-
of course research would be carried out by people doing degree courses at the various universities as well.
- Institute of Medical Research - www.pngimr.org.pg/ - Goroka,
- National Agricultural Research Institute - www.nari.org.pg,
- Institute of National Affairs - www.inapng.com - Port Moresby,
- Forest Reseach Institute (Lae),
- Institute of Applied Social and Economic Research,
- National Research Institute (NRI) Port Moresby - www.nri.org.pg,
Don't forget that the Summer Institute of Linguistics, (SIL) at Ukarumpa in the Eastern Highlands province does research into languages of PNG and the National Sports Institute would research sport
Other institutes outside PNG also do research in PNG- As an example the Botanical Research Institute of Texas does work in PNG. See also www.kinseyinstitute.org/ccies/pg.php
Also companies such as (for example) PricewaterhouseCoopers' Health Research Institute does research in PNG. This is not a comprehensive list but should be used as a guide only.
If you know of other institutes please let the PNG FAQ's know and I will update this FAQ.

These pages need your help - If you know an answer to a FAQ about PNG that isn't here or is here and is wrong please let me know. Ask a question - Submit a questionPlease note that this is not "Ask Jeeves" - you cannot type a whole sentence as your query. Enter a word, a phrase, or several words and press search.
Please remember that this is a FAQ database about Papua New Guinea.
Doing a search for PNG or New Guinea or even P.N.G will probably not return much. Keep the search simple. i.e. if you want to find out the population simply enter "population" without the quotes. There is no need to have PNG / P.N.G or whatever in the search string.
Also - Spelling is important searching for 'inkom' will not return items related to 'income'
