Scarifying involves scratching, etching, or superficially cutting designs, pictures, or words into the skin as a permanent body modification. Scarification is practiced in the Sepik region of PNG. Scarification is usually more visible on darker skinned people than tattoos. It is similar in nature to livestock branding.

Sepik River

The mighty Sepik River is the longest river on the island of New Guinea. The majority of the river flows through the provinces of Sandaun and East Sepik, with a small section flowing through the Indonesian province of Papua. The tribes living along the river produce magnificent wood carvings and artful clay pottery.
